The RURAL ROADS FORUM
(RRF), Nepal, whose members include DRSP, RAP, RPN,
INFRIN, NFRTD invited Scott Justice for a presentation
on MECHANIZING RURAL TRANSPORT VIA ALTERNATIVE IMTs
Excerpt from RRF's March News Letter-
Scott Justice made a presentation on alternative transport
in Nepal, with some comparisons to Bangladesh and China.
For Nepal various modifications of rickshaws and motorbikes
have been developed on the terai. Bullock cart usage
is declining on the terai as motorised transport becomes
more popular. SJ noted that there have been problems
registering alternative modes of transport in Nepal
and cartels also discourage competition, reducing traffic
on some roads. Training and loans are essential for
most people to start using such transport.
Power tillers are increasingly being used in the hills,
but in steep and slippery conditions there are traction
problems. Some methods of improving traction were discussed,
including weighting of the machine or wheels, drive
shafts to the trailer and shifting of the axle location.
RogerW also noted that the power tillers are difficult
to transport when there is no access.
BR noted that Practical Action are also involved in
alternative transport, but tend to concentrate on non-motorised
modes. JS noted that power tillers cause damage to earthen
roads during the wet season, although this is the case
for most vehicles.
Action:- RW to keep in touch with Scott Justice for
future meetings and issues. SJ to send a hard copy of
the presentation to RW for the files.
