National Agricultural Mechanization Committee

National Agricultural Mechanization Committee is Chaired by the Secretary of Agriculture and Cooperatives, in the Government of Nepal. Under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives the NAMC was first formed with support of the UN's Regional Network for Agricultural Machinery (RNAM, now known as UN's Asian Pacific Center for Agricultural Engineering and Machinery ) and was to be a a national round table for discussion of the needs and . Though it was active in its earlier years the NAMC became dormant for a long period in the 1990s. Beginning in 2000 NAEF and its partners and its partners CIMMYT, and the Agricultural Machinery Merchants Association AMMA (NAEF aided in AMMA's formation in 2003) supported regular yearly meetings of NAMC till 2005. These meetings helped restart a national dialogue that was crucial for informing policy makers and government officials of not only the needs, but also what was actually happening around in and near Nepal in regards to socially equitable rural and agricultural mechanization processes. For over a decade rural and agricultural mechanization fell off the radar screens of the government and donors and there was literally no one department, agency. or discipline left to monitor what was actually happening in the farmers field. Many do not realize that lot of mechanization had happen even with the past laisser-faire attitude. One of the positive outcomes has been that the Department of Agriculture created in 2005 the Agricultural Engineering Directorate. Even more recently is the specific inclusion of targeted agricultural mechanization in MOACs 2006 three year strategic agricultural development plan. And just now September 2008 Nepal's President Yadov specifically called for agricultural mechanization visa RCT adoption in his first budget speech.
