National Agricultural and Environmental Forum (NEAF) is please to announce it has successfully tested the first Nepali biodiesel made out of animal fat (buffalo) in a 2 wheel tractor. The production and tests have been done here in Kathmandu. NAEF has been testing the process of production of biodiesel (BD) from animal fat and after animal fat BD production NAEF ran the 2 wheel tractor, with no apparent problems for about an hour. NAEF’s goal is to be able to produce an affordable biodiesel for the farmers. The idea is to be able to produce at a small scale, decentralized at village or cooperative level.

Biodiesel refers to a non-petroleum-based diesel fuel consisting of short chain alkyl (methyl or ethyl) esters, made by transesterification of vegetable oil or animal fat (tallow), which can be used (alone, or blended with conventional petrodiesel) in unmodified diesel-engine vehicles. Biodiesel is distinguished from the straight vegetable oil (SVO) (sometimes referred to as "waste vegetable oil", "WVO", "used vegetable oil", "UVO", "pure plant oil", "PPO") used (alone, or blended) as fuels in some converted diesel vehicles
