Promotion of Chinese Two-Wheel Tractors (2WTs) in Nigeria

In 2002 Bauchi State imported 500 sets of 2WTs, reduced till/zero till seeders, trailers. In 2003 they sold 100 sets to the Zamfara State Government. In 2004 Dr. Jose Valencia , Sasakawa Global 2000's Country Director for Malawi and Nigeria came across a storage area in Gusau's State's tractor rental service where nearly 100 2WTs were sitting outside under the sun. THough new they looked ancient he said. After talking with Peter Hobbs and others about their success in south Asia he contacted NAEF to attempt to jumpstart sales. In short we found that the simple "engineering/operators" training provided by the Chinese supplier had not stimulated interests of the farmers or the state ag engineers. The 3 week CA, rural mechanization, private sector service provider training held in Gusau all 500 of the tractors and accessories were sold within a year.
